Part 2: Using Epoxy Floor Paints in Your Home
In the last few years a new type of epoxy floor paint has been put on the market, it is called polyureas and polyaspartics. These new coatings have unique characteristics such as being able to withstand cold weather applications and are more flexible type of coating making it less likely to crack. These types of epoxy coating were originally developed for coating steel to prevent corrosion. Their exceptional performance and quick curing led to different applications most notably on concrete. Though there are a few companies promoting a polyaspartic system for the do it yourself market they are an advanced coating that should be left to the professionals. These types of paint should not be handled by non professionals.
Some reasons that these types of paint are popular are because of the price range of these types of paint and coating. They are relatively inexpensive, which is great for a do it yourselfer type of guy. If you plan on doing your entire garage floor it will cost less than a few hundred bucks to do the whole thing. There is one thing that many epoxy type coatings are not good for, which is putting them outside. There are types of epoxy coating that can be put outside, however these are the much more stronger types and not the normal one that is pre-mixed that you would use for the driveway. Although many of the types of epoxy claim that they work outside I have read in research that it is not recommended unless using a stronger type of epoxy. So epoxy paints and coatings are a very good cheap way to paint your garage or basement floor to give it a nice shine.
